Automated Audits and Infrastructure Code Reviews
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the preview availability of Well-Architected Agent, an artificial intelligence tool developed to analyze cloud environments against the Well-Architected Framework. The system reviews workloads across four foundational pillars: costs, security, performance, and resilience.
By correlating operational metrics, application topology, technical configurations, and stated business targets, the agent generates prioritized action items covering more than 65 AWS services. Furthermore, the tool can inspect infrastructure as code (IaC) templates, including Terraform and CloudFormation, before they are deployed to production.
Implementation Packages and Workflow Integration
To use the service, administrators configure a profile defining targeted accounts, regions, business goals, and the optimization pillars they wish to emphasize. The agent then scans the resources and groups its findings across three levels: resource, application, and overall architecture.
For remediation, the system delivers implementation packages with CLI commands, IaC code adjustments, and automation steps. AWS principal writer Channy Yun noted that teams can integrate these recommendations into existing developer environments via API access, the AWS MCP Server, and plugins for AI-assisted coding tools.
Industry Feedback and Service Constraints
AWS has cautioned that recommendations produced by the AI agent may contain inaccuracies or incomplete data, requiring proper human review before application. Industry specialists have also voiced reservations regarding hands-off automation. Nicolas Payette, CEO of Specira AI, pointed out the challenge of interpreting business goals when many companies lack formally defined technical priorities. Likewise, Alex Kargin, senior data engineer at Silicon Army, emphasized the difficulty of converting recommendations into automated fixes due to structural trade-offs, such as cost reductions negatively affecting resilience.
Currently, Well-Architected Agent is hosted in three US regions, though it supports workloads running across any geographical location. To access the preview, organizations must maintain an active Business Support+ plan or higher.
What this means for your business
For SME decision-makers, this tool provides an automated path to audit AWS setups and review infrastructure templates prior to deployment. However, eligibility is restricted to higher-tier support tiers (Business Support+ and above), and AWS itself emphasizes that AI-generated recommendations require human technical review to catch potential inaccuracies.
